Australia's greenhouse pollution emissions level is the highest in the world, on a per person basis. We also have enormous expanses of soil-degraded areas that are crying out for rejuvenation.
Planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide emissions is one of the internationally recognised procedures for reducing the level of greenhouse gases.
Trees also assist with minimising the effects of soil salination and provide food and shelter for native animals.
Just one tree has the capacity to absorb more than a tonne of carbon over the course of its lifetime so it's not hard to make a difference.
Alternative Activities to Tree Planting
Even if you are in a drought affected area, there are still lots of activities that you can do to participate in National Tree Day. Alternative activities include:
Bush Regeneration
Site maintenance including weeding, pest control, follow up watering (if water restrictions are not a problem)
Interpretive walks - can be run by Landcare or council bushcare officer as an educational event
Site preperation (before the event) - is another way that you can get involved
Helping with transport (i.e. of the seedlings) on the day
